Mourinho couldn’t get reaction from Man Utd players – Lascellesby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United players lost faith in former manager Jose Mourinho, according to Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles.United have won three straight games since Mourinho’s sacking.Ahead of Wednesday night’s clash with United, Lascelles said: “They probably needed that (a change at the top). They have world-class players on big wages who have done it for their countries and for other teams, but have not done it for Manchester United.”Some players can only play for certain managers and that reaction you get from the players.”Maybe (Solskjaer) might be the difference in getting the best from those players. They have a lot of quality. It will be an exciting game.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say

No.“If you lose like we’ve lost in these last two games, it’s normal. For us, this is the worst period we’ve been in, but we have to be all together and push through it.“The stuff about the squad, I know that’s not the case. But it’s natural these things will come up now because of the situation we find ourselves in.“It’s the first time that we’ve found ourselves in this position, we can’t back down from it. We’ve got to push through it.”
🅰️ @DeBruyneKev ⚽️ @sterling7 pic.twitter.com/RP0SP1Gr1p — The Emirates FA Cup (@EmiratesFACup) January 6, 2019 City fought their way back into the title race without him on Thursday night but, if they are to catch and then overtake Liverpool, they will need him for the run-in. It was fairly argued back in August that while De Bruyne is a magical player, if any squad could cope without him it would be City’s. And that proved to be the case until injuries elsewhere took their toll.Few back then expected Liverpool to be such strong and impressive challengers, either, but there can be no doubt now that City will need to be at their very best if they are to claw back this four-point deficit. And for City to be at their very best, they need De Bruyne. Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries. After the thrills and spills of Thursday night, this was a very different outing at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City, having boosted their title chances by beating Liverpool in the most dramatic of games, had a far easier time of it as they saw off Championship strugglers Rotherham United.Pep Guardiola named a strong team and it did a professional job, racking up a 3-0 lead by half-time and coasting to an eventual 7-0 victory.Guardiola is clearly taking this competition seriously and you would not be surprised if he wanted to maintain the momentum of Thursday night by ensuring things went to plan here, either. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Yet whatever team he could have chosen for Sunday’s game, Kevin De Bruyne would always have been part of it. He may have missed the Liverpool game but he will be a big part of all that comes next.Guardiola suggests his injury problems could even boost City as they enter the business end of the season.”I said many times how important Kevin is for us,” the Catalan said on Sunday. “Without him last season would not have been possible. We have done incredible in terms of results. We have an opponent [Liverpool] that has done better than us. That can happen. We were two seasons without Mendy, we do not have a substitute. We were sad, he was not there but we have to carry on.”He has been out a long time but perhaps that can help us. He is going to give us extra, the creativity in the final third, the fight.”City were doing just fine without him for four of the five months he has missed this season – they were top going into December, after all – but injuries to Fernandinho and David Silva over Christmas combined to ensure the champions were not as slick up front and not as resilient at the back. They dropped points and Liverpool took advantage.De Bruyne was actually involved as City fell to their two shock defeats over Christmas, results that put them so far behind Liverpool in the title race, yet he was nowhere near fit and he was not surrounded by his two most experienced midfield accomplices.Appearances against Crystal Palace and Leicester City may not have amounted to much in terms of results but it was vital game time as the Belgian geared up to face Liverpool in what was becoming a must-win fixture.Yet another set-back, minor compared to the two knee injuries he has suffered yet serious enough for him to miss City’s last two games, ruled him out of the big clash. It has been an incredibly frustrating season for him on a personal level. As Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp plotted their moves, bringing on expensive substitutes to help wrest any kind of advantage, De Bruyne stayed out on the touchline warming up. When Guardiola finally decided to bring on Kyle Walker and Nicolas Otamendi to help deal with the Liverpool onslaught, he told his most influential player to sit back down on the bench. On Sunday, however, he was back, back in a starting line-up that could probably be trusted to win an FA Cup final, let alone a home clash against an out-of-sorts Championship side.Like previous outings this season – not just in December but at the end of October, before he picked up his second knee injury – this was just as much about getting minutes under the belt, again.A month ago City’s doctors didn’t expect him to be back to his best until February anyway, and that was before his recent set-back, so who knows when we will see the real De Bruyne. Yet there were signs on Sunday that his touch and his vision is sharpening up.He played 67 minutes against Rotherham and demonstrated those touches and passes that nobody else at City, perhaps nobody else in England, can pull off.At one point in the first half he controlled an over-hit pass with the top of his head, turned and darted past the man closing him down, free to charge into opposition territory. Unfortunately for him and anybody who would have liked to see it lead to a goal or even a chance, he proceeded to give the ball away by attempting one of his defence-splitting passes. There were plenty of other occasions when they did come off, however, and plenty more occasions when he got himself into position on the right-hand side and fired in crosses – high or low – begging to be put in the back of the net. Perhaps had Gabriel Jesus been a little sharper, they would have been. And surely in the coming months they will be. While the level of opposition has to be taken into account, De Bruyne looked far sharper here than he did against Everton in December, for example, when he came on as a substitute and was, understandably after so much time off, incredibly sloppy. That kind of performance was never on the cards and that became obvious when he weighed up his options on the edge of the box and played an inch-perfect pass to Raheem Sterling to open the scoring, and from that moment on it was a procession.Guardiola was delighted, especially so with his main man.”We spoke with him yesterday to play 65-70 minutes at ful intensity and do everything that is good for his rhythm,” he said afterwards. “He played an incredible game, created a lot of chances and he has the vision to see what other people cannot see. Last season he played an incredible number of minutes and this season it is just 400 mintues when everyone else plays 2000. Today he was our captain and he showed on the pitch why.”
GLENDALE, AZ – DECEMBER 31: Head coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes looks on against the Clemson Tigers during the 2016 PlayStation Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium on December 31, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)Everyone is weighing in with opinions on the future of Urban Meyer as Ohio State football’s head coach following the latest news involving the scandal.Ohio State announced late on Sunday night that the investigation into Meyer and how he handled the domestic violence allegations against now-fired assistant coach Zach Smith will be completed within two weeks. Many, though, expect it to take less time. Some experts believe a decision will be made by mid-next week. One analyst, 105.7 The Zone’s Bruce Hooley, appeared on The Dan Patrick Show this morning. He offered his latest opinion on Urban Meyer’s future at Ohio State. He outlined the percentages as follows:0 percent chance Urban Meyer is fired50 percent chance Urban Meyer gets a multi-game suspension50 percent chance Urban Meyer gets no punishment at allSeveral analysts at ESPN are also starting to believe that Urban Meyer will keep his job. Paul Finebaum stated on Monday that it’s getting “pretty obvious” that Meyer will not be fired.“I think it’s pretty obvious from Ohio State realizing that the moment they put him on administrative leave it telegraphed to everyone ‘he’s done,’ to Urban realizing he had to change the narrative by issuing that statement on Friday afternoon coinciding with Zach Smith’s just purely embarrassing interview with ESPN,” Finebaum said.“And then, today, I think the betting line in Vegas is now shifting back toward Urban Meyer surviving somehow, whether it’s a two-game or four-game suspension; whether it’s a fine; whether it’s Urban Meyer sitting down with Rece (Davis) or Tom Rinaldi and crying on camera while Shelley looks at him and talks about how he’s the greatest man she’s ever known. You guys can spend plenty of time today coming up with the narrative, but I think we’ve all seen the movie before.”ESPN’s David Pollack, meanwhile, also believes that Meyer will not be fired. He sees a suspension coming for the Buckeyes’ head coach.
GLENDALE, AZ – JANUARY 01: Head coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes watches the action during the first quarter of the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at University of Phoenix Stadium on January 1, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)New details from Ohio State’s investigation into Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes’ football program, regarding the handling of domestic violence allegations against now-fired assistant coach Zach Smith, emerged late on Wednesday night.ESPN college football reporter Dan Murphy reported that the Powell Police Department, which responded to domestic violence allegations against Smith but made no arrests in 2015, are being cooperative with Ohio State’s investigation. However, Powell Police are refusing to give up information from some of the files, as they are protected since Smith was never arrested. The police are helping “as much as the law will allow” but have blocked attempts from Ohio State’s investigation team to get records that are sealed. From ESPN.com:Police in Powell, Ohio, have had preliminary conversations with the investigators, according to Chief of Police Gary Vest, and are willing to help as much as the law will allow. The Powell police visited Courtney Smith’s home twice in the fall of 2015 to respond to complaints about habitual domestic violence and stalking. Neither visit resulted in an arrest or any charges against Zach Smith.Vest said he is not at liberty to share the details of what his officers discovered about those incidents in 2015 because of confidentiality laws designed to protect the identity of people accused of crimes. Because Smith was not charged with a crime as a result of those incidents, the details of what police found while responding to those cases are not public record, according to Powell’s city attorney. Vest said he also denied a request from the investigators working on behalf of Ohio State to see the same records based on advice received from the city’s attorney. If Ohio State’s current investigation team is unable to gain access to these files, you have to wonder if this affected any attempts by Ohio State to investigate claims against Smith back in 2015.Ohio State has said that its investigation into Urban Meyer should take about two weeks. It’s possible we learn something regarding his future in Columbus by next week.

(Photo by Kent Horner/Getty Images)A live college football mascot has reportedly suffered potentially “life-threatening” injuries as a result of a prank gone wrong.Army cadets reportedly took Air Force’s live falcon mascot as a prank ahead of this week’s football game (which Army won, 17-14).The live falcon reportedly suffered an injury to its wing during the prank and might have to be euthanized. From The Gazette:The 22-year-old white gyrfalcon, Aurora, was taken from an Army colonel’s home as part of an Air Force/Army week prank by West Point cadets, according to an Air Force representative speaking to The Gazette on the condition of anonymity. While being kept by the Army cadets, the bird apparently injured a wing. The Air Force official said it is possible the bird will need to be euthanized as a result of the injury. The bird was being brought back to Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon on the football team’s charter flight, Air Force associate athletic director for communications Troy Garnhart said.Air Force said in a statement that it’s not entirely sure what the extent of the injuries are. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it seems. This type of falcon can reportedly live up to 25 years.
LOS ANGELES, CA – DECEMBER 10: The sun sets behind the game between the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on December 10, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)The much-anticipated Week 11 Monday Night Football matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs will not be played as scheduled in Mexico City.Originally slated to be played at Estadio Azteca, the game has been moved to the LA Coliseum. The reason for the change is the poor field conditions at the Mexican venue.Reports from earlier today indicated that some players were considering boycotting the game if they had to play on the shoddy grass surface.Unreal. Here’s the field in Mexico pic.twitter.com/DFPaXKfB2r— Scott Zolak (@scottzolak) November 13, 2018Since the Rams were going to give up a home game by agreeing to play in Mexico City, they get to host the contest after it was moved. That might seem like a huge disadvantage for the Chiefs, but its not like the Rams have a major home field advantage. Both teams enter the game with 9-1 records and the inside track at the No. 1 seed in their respective conferences.Monday night’s Chiefs-Rams game now is being moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles due to poor field conditions in Estadio Azteca, per sources.Back to LA for the Rams, who have been training for altitude in Colorado Springs.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) November 13, 2018Wherever this game is played, it will be a matchup of two explosive offenses led by young, star quarterbacks and coached by innovative head coaches. This is as good of a late-season showdown as you’re going to get in the NFL.In fact, it might even be a potential Super Bowl preview.
ESPNPlayers skipping bowl games has become a controversial topic in recent years, but it has become more and more of a trend. After the devastating injury to Michigan star tight end Jake Butt a few years ago, it is a legitimate concern for players with NFL aspirations. In a few weeks, West Virginia will be playing in the Camping World Bowl against Syracuse without star quarterback Will Grier. He may not be a future first rounder, but he will be one of the more interesting quarterback prospects in the draft. While most probably understand where players like Grier are coming from, the decision still drew ire from some.FOX Sports Doug Gottlieb was among those critical, saying that quarterbacks are at much less injury risk than some other players in these games. Will Grier sitting out a Bowl Game is comical. Guy can really play, but has there ever even been a QB injured in a bowl game? Stop it already— Doug Gottlieb (@GottliebShow) December 12, 2018If anything, today’s early bowl games have validated the decision that Will Grier and others have made, with injuries to star quarterbacks Mason Fine and Manny Wilkins.Fine, a prolific thrower for North Texas, was knocked out of the game against Utah State in the late first quarter. The Mean Green wound up getting drubbed 52-13, with four different UNT players throwing passes.Moments ago, Arizona State’s Manny Wilkins suffered a scary-looking injury as well. After a throw to the end zone, he was down on the field for a while. He was able to walk off on his own, but it didn’t look good.Manny Wilkins’ last game at Arizona State and he took a big shot, was able to walk off the field but went straight to the medical tent. #LasVegasBowl pic.twitter.com/6ViH1CH3uX— #NobodyDied (@ftbeard_17) December 15, 2018It is unclear how serious these injuries are, but it is obvious that quarterbacks are at plenty of risk in any game.Obviously that doesn’t mean no quarterback has anything to gain in a regular bowl game, or that more should sit out. They should be allowed to make the decision that is right for them, without ridicule.
STATE COLLEGE, PA – NOVEMBER 21: Christian Hackenberg #14 of the Penn State Nittany Lions throws a pass in the second quarter against the Michigan Wolverines at Beaver Stadium on November 21, 2015 in State College, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Evan Habeeb/Getty Images)In three years as an NFL player, Christian Hackenberg failed to take a snap in a regular season game. The former Penn State star was a second round pick by the New York Jets in the 2016 NFL Draft. He rode the bench for two years in New York, before having brief stints with the Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, and Cincinnati Bengals. Now, he’s attempting to revive his pro football career in the new Alliance of American Football. The league kicks off the weekend after the Super Bowl, and Hackenberg is reportedly the favorite to start for the Memphis Express. He’s been in a position battle with a few other prominent former college quarterbacks.LSU product and former Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger, Troy’s Brandon Silvers, and Tennessee-Martin’s Troy Cook.Per AAF reporter Dylan Carino, Christian Hackenberg is separating himself as Memphis’ starting quarterback. From AAF.com:1. Hackenberg gains lead in the QB raceThe four-man race for quarterback seems to be nearing its end with a strong performance from Christian Hackenberg against the Stallions. The Penn State product was 9 of 15 for 128 yards passing and one touchdown — a 19-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Fabian Guerra on post route up the right hash. Hackenberg had a strong grasp of the offense particularly early on, going 6 for 6 on the opening drive, which culminated with his touchdown pass.Throughout the majority of camp, it was Zach Mettenberger who had the lead in the starting quarterback race, but after Sunday, the starting role looks like Hackenberg’s to lose.Hackenberg was an all-world talent in high school, and had an extremely strong freshman season under Bill O’Brien at Penn State. He never really built on it in his two additional years though, and flamed out in the NFL.If he can get things straightened out in this new league, it’d be really good news—and publicity—for the AAF.[AAF.com]

Reuters WellingtonMarch 18, 2019UPDATED: March 18, 2019 18:36 IST CEO Dave Richardson says security at the World Cup in England and Wales will be the ICC’s top priority (AP Photo)There is no question of being complacent with security at this year’s World Cup in England and Wales following a mass shooting at two Christchurch mosques last week, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has said.Members of the Bangladesh cricket team narrowly avoided being caught up in the shooting, which killed 49 people, by a suspected white supremacist last Friday.Their third Test against New Zealand that had been scheduled to start on Saturday at nearby Hagley Oval was subsequently cancelled and it also prompted calls from Asian cricket officials and politicians to step up security for touring teams.ICC chief executive David Richardson said security was always an issue for his organisation and ensuring the May 30-July 14 World Cup in England and Wales was safe would be a priority.”It has always been the case that we’ve had to make sure that we keep security absolutely priority, not only for the players but also for the visiting media, fans, spectators and everyone who attends the event,” Richardson was quoted as saying by cricket website Cricinfo.”Something happening in New Zealand probably took a lot of people by surprise and it emphasised the need not to be complacent, especially going into the World Cup.”I know the work done already by the security director together with all the security agencies in the UK, they are leaving no stone unturned, and if the threat level should rise in any way we will (further upgrade) the plans in place.”Cricket teams have previously abandoned tours because of security fears but most had been in South Asia, including Bangladesh which Australia decided against touring in 2015.advertisementSri Lanka’s team bus was attacked by gunmen in Lahore during their tour of Pakistan in 2009. Six members of the team were wounded, while six security personnel and two civilians were killed.Pakistan still host nearly all of their international matches in the United Arab Emirates due to ongoing security concerns.New Zealand abandoned their 1987 tour of Sri Lanka following a bombing near their hotel in Colombo in which more than 100 people were killed. They also abandoned a tour of Pakistan in May 2002 following a suicide bombing outside their hotel in Karachi. For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Sanket Vijayasarathy New DelhiJune 27, 2019UPDATED: June 28, 2019 08:41 IST HIGHLIGHTSThe iPhone X is available starting at Rs 59,900 on Flipkart. The iPhone X offers an OLED display while the iPhone XR sports an LCD panel. The iPhone XR offers a superior battery life and faster A12 Bionic chipset. The iPhone X kick started Apple’s new direction towards a bezel-less future. Launched in 2017, the iPhone X offered an edge-to-edge OLED display with a wide notch that has now become the default iPhone symbol, a stainless steel frame and a blazing fast A11 Bionic chipset. Unfortunately, the iPhone X’s starting price of Rs 91,900 was quite out of reach for most consumers in India.Cut to 2019 and the iPhone X is seeing its lowest price ever on Flipkart. The iPhone X is available starting at Rs 59,900 for the base model with 64GB of internal storage. The price can go further lower to Rs 58,749 if one is able to avail the 5 per cent instant discount offer on EMI with ICICI Bank credit and debit cards. This is quite a price drop, but an expected one since the phone is close to two years old now. Interestingly, you can also get the newer iPhone XR (Review) at around the same price point. So which “affordable” iPhone should you spend your money on right now?The iPhone XR was launched as an “affordable” version of the iPhone XS and XS Max, although its original price of Rs 76,900 is anything but affordable in India. The iPhone XR is now also available at Rs 59,900, but it comes with certain tradeoffs that makes even the iPhone X look better in 2019.iPhone X offers a better displayThe one area where the iPhone X easily trumps the iPhone XR is the display. The iPhone X gets a 5.8-inch OLED screen with a 1125×2436 resolution and 458ppi while the iPhone XR offers a larger 6.1-inch screen but with an LCD panel, 828×1792 resolution and 326ppi. The iPhone X simply offers a richer, more vivid display with fantastic colour reproduction, deeper blacks and higher contrast ratio.advertisement The iPhone X’s OLED Retina display is understandably more attractive, especially at its new price point. It also gets a more premium stainless steel finish which looks shiny and quite attractive. That being said, the iPhone XR’s aluminium frame is more scratch-resistant and ages better.Equally fast performanceThe iPhone X might be nearing two years now, but its A11 Bionic chipset is still a beast and can still take on the best mobile processors that 2019 has to offer. The A11 Bionic is a 10nm chipset which is extremely snappy and smooth at handling pretty much anything you throw at it. In real-world performance, one would find it difficult to tell the A11 Bionic from the A12 Bionic processor that powers the iPhone XR.Of course, the A12 Bionic offers better long-term benefits. It is Apple’s first 7nm-based processor, which means it not only offers a bump in performance but is also more power efficient than its predecessor. It also comes with a 50 per cent fast GPU and an improved neural engine that is capable of performing 5 trillion operations in a second. What this essentially means is that the iPhone XR is better suited to handle graphic intensive games and AI/ machine learning tasks, both of which are only expected to get more complex in the years ahead.iPhone XR offers superior battery lifeArguably the most noticeable benefit of running on a 7nm chipset is the power efficiency. The iPhone XR with the A12 Bionic processor offers a terrific battery life which is easily the best battery life on an iPhone yet. In our long-term review of the iPhone XR, we noted that the battery life continued to stay strong even after six months of use, offering around 5-6 hours of screen-on time. In comparison, the iPhone X struggles to last a full day as it needs to push more pixels and uses a higher power consuming chipset. But with iOS 13, things are looking a little better for the iPhone X.iOS 13 will be best experienced on iPhone XiOS 13 is Apple’s latest mobile operating system and is currently in public beta form. The latest software offers a host of new features and updates, but one in particular looks to benefit the iPhone X more than the iPhone XR i.e Night Mode. iOS 13 brings a system-wide dark mode which turns the background of the UI dark. Moreover, it’s not just a shade of grey but true black, which is where the iPhone X OLED panel can really take full advantage. With most native Apple apps and some popular third-party apps like Twitter and Messenger offering true dark mode, the iPhone X’s OLED panel will become more power efficient as individual pixels can turn off. This should naturally mean one can expect improvements to the battery life on the iPhone X. iPhone XR with an LCD display, however, will not see any major improvements to its battery life even with Night Mode enabled. Apart from that, iOS 13 is said to improve overall system performance, making older devices like the iPhone X snappier. One can also expect faster Face ID unlock with iOS 13 on both the iPhone X and iPhone XR.advertisementiPhone XR offers a single, but great rear cameraThe iPhone X offers a dual camera setup, which is the basic minimum these days. With the iPhone XR, Apple decided to go with a single 12MP wide-angle camera. While logic would suggest two cameras are better than one, we believe the iPhone XR has the advantage as it gets a lot of help from the new A12 Bionic chip with an advanced Neural Engine. The iPhone XR with its Smart HDR feature manages to capture stunning daylight photos with excellent contrast, depth control and detailing. Apple’s software optimisation is great on the iPhone XR as the single camera is able to capture attractive and natural-looking bokehs with adjustable background blur all through software. The iPhone X’s secondary telephoto lens does come in handy for 2x lossless zoom, but that’s about it. For everything else, the iPhone XR is more than capable.ALSO READ | iPhone X sells for Rs 58,749, Nokia 5.1 Plus for Rs 7,999, and Redmi 6 for Rs 6,999 on Flipkart todayGet real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story? The Kiwis missed their chance of lifting the World Cup trophy at the Lord’s balcony due to inferior boundary count after both the 50 overs and the Super Over ended in ties. And at the post-match presentation ceremony, Tendulkar did not mention anything about the ill luck, the Super Over or the boundary count rule which denied Williamson the opportunity to have his hands on the coveted trophy.Williamson scored 578 runs in the tournament — the most by a captain in a World Cup — and Tendulkar said it was the calm demeanour of the Black Caps skipper which was responsible for his success.”The best thing about Williamson is ability to stay calm. He doesn’t lose his composure in any circumstance. It was unfortunate that he could not win the World Cup but it did not reflect on his face,” Tendulkar told 100Mb.The legendary Indian batsman said Williamson has a unique style of captaincy. “Williamson sees the game from an entirely different perspective. His field placements, bowling changes while defending a low score are commendable. Even when (Ravindra) Jadeja was playing big shots in semi-final, he was calm and in the end, the result was in his favour.”advertisementThe 46-year-old named Williamson the captain of his favourite XI of the 2019 World Cup, which includes five Indians. Also Read | World Cup 2019: James Neesham’s childhood coach died during Super OverAlso Read | New Zealand players make sombre homecoming after World Cup blowAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Standing in the courtyard of the hotel in Málaga, Spain, leaning against the fastest car I’ve ever driven, I glance over at my co-pilot.Slightly out of breath, he looks hypnotized by the orange supercar sitting before us. His eyes slowly wander from the car and onto my face.“Was I really going 275 kilometers per hour?” he asks.“It was actually 273 … but who’s counting?” I reply with a chuckle.“You could’ve slowed me down,” he says. “We could’ve been arrested. Then again, that would’ve been such good press for both of us. We would’ve looked so cool …”“I know, Patrick, I know.” I reply, with a slow nod, tapping on carbon fiber wing.As an automotive journalist, wild adventures in far-off places are commonplace for me. Except this one is different.Today my driving partner is renowned actor Sir Patrick Stewart and the car that left us speechless is the 2015 McLaren 650S.Before we climb behind the wheel with Sir Stewart, let me tell you a bit about McLaren’s latest supercar.Hyperbole“Better than the 12C,” said the McLaren representative during our briefing. That’s hard to imagine, considering that just three years ago McLaren Automotive relaunched itself into the world of street-legal supercars. Although it hadn’t launched a car in 19 years, the brand was immediately accepted amongst the likes of Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and Ferrari. However, the folks at McLaren didn’t accept a one-hit wonder and call it a day, as they had with the F1. Instead, they sought to calibrate and recalibrate the tuning on the MP4-12C.Accordingly, they’ll tell you that the 2014 and 2011 models drive completely differently, all thanks to software adjustments. And the best part? Owners of early models need only visit the dealer to have their cars modernized with a quick update to the ECU.McLaren is a brand focused on space-aged technology – speed through science – above all else, and it shows. At its core, the 650S borrows nearly 70 percent of its components from the 12C, and the rest comes from lessons learned in developing McLaren’s P1 hypercar. From a visual standpoint, the nose of the 650 is shared with the P1, while the rest of the car is mostly 12C. The twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 engine has been tuned up to 641 horsepower (650 PS, hence its name), and 500 pound-feet of torque. The suspension has been stiffened. The sport and track modes adjusted. And the aero work produces more downforce, front and rear.Hell, it’ll even crack 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds.Equal parts road and trackOur hotel overlooked the Mediterranean, about an hour and a half from Ascari Race Resort in Ronda. The drive to and around the track zigzagged upward into the mountains, into the rolling farmlands of Andalusia. After a quick breakfast on the terrace, I walked out to the courtyard to meet my Tarocco Orange 650S.The doors get you, every time. They don’t open directly forward like a Ferrari, or upward like a Mercedes SLS, but rather like an open-armed sun salutation in yoga – stretching up and out to welcome the day. Open both and take a photo; it’s dramatic from every angle.Swing open the doors and pop inside and you’ll find a customizable cabin. You can have the interior in nearly any color you’d like, with choices between the sportier Alcantara finish with carbon fiber sport seats sourced from the P1 or leather seats that feel little more relaxed and significantly more luxurious. For the driving we’d do on this trip, I preferred the sports seats. However, the car feels more upscale with the full leather dash. Ladies in skirts will prefer entry and exit with the width of the traditional – and adjustable – bucket seats.A word to the wise: You may want to build your car according to how you’ll spend most of the time in your 650S. But, the car is more comfortable for long hauls than the comparable 458 Italia, regardless of your seating preference, so there’s no way to lose. NASCAR Driver Brad Keselowski on Crashing, Winning, and Creating a Legacy What Wrangler Is Doing to Make Denim More Sustainable 6 Fastest Cars in the World Right Now Where there isn’t Alcantara or leather on the interior, you’ll only find carbon fiber – and plenty of it. The car is made almost entirely of the lightweight woven element, with exception to a bit of magnesium behind the dash and the aluminum extrusions that mount the front and rear bumpers.Sitting in the 650S feels like sitting in something from the future, as if we’ve utilized some alien technology to build a rocket with tires. Even the infotainment system’s interface looks like it was pulled right out of Tron, with its portrait orientation and simple black and white screens. It’s gorgeous, it’s responsive, and it’s easy to use. The only downside is that you can’t skip audio tracks unless you’re using the media screen, which requires backing out of the phone and navigation features first.AscariOn the Ascari track, Euan Hankey – one of McLaren’s factory GT drivers – guided me through the Normal, Sport and Track modes, pushing me harder and harder with each lap.We sped through each of Ascari’s three loops, faster and faster with each consecutive lap. I was blown away by the car’s traction and power delivery. Honestly, there was no way that I could push the car to the edge of its limits; the 650S is built to appease even a professional racer.Pumped full of adrenaline and eager for more, I asked Euan to show me what the car could really do with a racer behind the wheel. I’ll freely admit that he’s the first driver to ever legitimately scare me. Between the 650S’ mind-boggling handing and his tremendous driving, I walked away a little shaky, but completely impressed.Until this day, my personal favorite car has been the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black, an exotic muscle car with a completely different kind of personality, but similar levels of power and performance. Even other cars, like the Nissan GT-R and Lexus LFA have absolutely dazzled me, but my time in the McLaren casts a long shadow over each of these cars.Maybe it’s the novelty of a brand many people don’t know. Maybe it’s the glove-like fit of the cabin. Maybe it’s just the doors. Either way, a dozen laps around Ascari with a professional racer have changed my tune, and I’m not sure what I could possibly drive – save maybe the P1 – that I’d enjoy even more.Crème de la CrèmeThe next morning, after a full nights’ rest full of track-day dreams, I went down to the hotel café for breakfast in the garden. As I settled in and sipped my cappuccino in silence, I glanced around the patio. As I surveyed the place and the other patrons, I suddenly did a double take.Sitting at the adjacent table was Sir Patrick Stewart, captain of the Enterprise, leader of the X-Men, and my childhood hero.Maybe I’m the obnoxious American that Europeans curse. But I don’t really care. But without hesitation, I walked over to Sir Stewart’s table, squatted down next to him and asked the question that no one can refuse: “How would you feel about taking a spin in a McLaren?”Eyebrows rise. A smile is cracked. Waivers are signed. A friend made.Warp speedI told Sir Patrick that I would take us out of the town we were staying in, to warm up the engine. Then the keys were his to bring us home again. As I sped through the Spanish countryside, we talked about the McLaren’s active aerodynamics system, which functions as an air brake when you slow down quickly enough. We talked about his adventures with Stirling Moss and Jeremy Clarkson, too.Eventually, I pulled off to swap seats. That’s when I realized that Sir Patrick’s story about “only liking to drive up to a certain speed … a comfortable one,” and his long list of driving practice didn’t necessarily sync.Sir Patrick is more adept behind the wheel than he lead on. In fact, he took us all the way to 170 mph – through a tunnel – before lifting off the accelerator. There’s a warp speed joke in there somewhere, but I’ll let it rest.We could’ve been killed. We could’ve been arrested. Instead, we were left rolling in laughter and excitement. We returned back to the hotel and took a selfie in the main drive, which he tweeted out to his followers. That gave the folks at McLaren the chance to tell him everything that I hadn’t already, as well as plan a visit to the factory to see where the magic happens in Woking, England.ConclusionThe 2015 McLaren 650S is priced from $265,000, just north of the MP4-12C it replaces. It’s an aesthetic masterpiece, and a brilliant work of machinery and science-fiction/fact, absolutely worthy of its position in the realm of supercars.Better, though, is that while it may offer similar levels of thrill found by some of its competitors, it does so more comfortably than most. Ipso facto, it’s one of the best ultra-performance daily drivers available on the market today. It’s fast – very fast – with a top speed of 207 mph, and that’s not even the fastest car McLaren builds. Crafted from 100-percent lambskin and offered in a select array of styles and colors, these heirloom-quality bomber jackets are more than just a fashion piece — they’re meant to be passed down from one generation to the next. And yes, the brand has the exact model Cruise wore as Maverick.Cockpit USA, the US Air Force’s official supplier of A-2 leather pilot jackets, has been crafting historically rooted bomber jackets since 1975. It all started with aviator Jeff Clyman, who routinely turned down offers from strangers to buy his father’s WWII bomber jacket right off his back. With the help of his “aviation brat” wife Jacky, Clyman quickly grew the company from a humble mail-order catalog into the country’s leading manufacturer of period aviator jackets. Crafted from the finest materials from original military designs, the Cockpit USA’s AVIREX-label jackets are the undisputed standard for this iconic American garment. While our attitudes toward war and patriotism may not be quite what they were in 1986 —and the human fighter pilot is fast being put out of work by drones — there’s no denying that the bomber jacket is, and always will be, an emblem of the effortlessly cool confidence that comes from an independent spirit.
