(AP Photo/Isaac Brekken, File)LAS VEGAS — The start line for the upcoming Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon has been moved away from the site of the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history, organizers said Friday. The Nov. 12 evening race will start in front of the New York-New York resort on the Las Vegas Strip, about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of last year’s start near the Mandalay Bay hotel, Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon series executive Josh Furlow said.ADVERTISEMENT The Mandalay Bay was the hotel from which a gunman on the 32nd floor fired assault-style weapons Oct. 1 into a country music concert crowd of about 22,000 people, killing 58 and injuring almost 550.After using that same open-air festival ground for pre-race activities the last several years, the gathering spot for this year’s marathon and half-marathon will be between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo casinos and the T-Mobile Arena, said Dan Cruz, spokesman for race organizer The Competitor Group.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutThe overall 26.2-mile (42-kilometer) marathon and 13.1-mile (21-kilometer) half-marathon courses are still being finalized, Cruz said. ‘US troops killed Afghans for fun’

first_imgIn one of the grisliest accusations levelled against American troops in Afghanistan, a group of US soldiers has been accused of randomly killing Afghan civilians for sport and then keeping their body parts as trophies. The killings are alleged to have been carried out by rogue members of a platoon from the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division based in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, The Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing army legal documents and interviews with the people involved. The deadly ‘ game’ was set in motion in January, when an Afghan man approached the soldiers in the La Mohammed Kalay village, the report said.As the man neared, one soldier tossed a grenade on the groung to create the ruse that the group was under attack, prompting the others to open fire and kill the civilian, the paper noted.According to The Post , the unprovoked attack on January 15 was the start of a shooting spree against Afghan civilians.Members of the platoon have been charged with dismembering and photographing corpses, as well as hoarding a skull and other human bones, the report said.Military documents allege that five members of the unit staged three murders in Kandahar between January and May, the paper noted.Seven other soldiers have been charged with crimes related to the case, including the use of hashish , attempts to impede the investigation and a retaliatory gang assault on a private who blew the whistle, according to The Post . Army officials have not disclosed a motive for the killings, the report said.advertisementBut a review of military court documents and interviews with people familiar with the investigation suggest the soldiers, fuelled by hashish and alcohol, commited the killings essentially for sport, the paper said. The accused deny any wrongdoing, The Post said but noted that the case has already been marked by a cycle of accusations and counter- accusations among the defendants as they seek to pin the blame on each other. While the army has acted quickly and arrested the soldiers, the paper noted that the subsequent investigation has raised accusations about whether the military ignored warnings that the out- of- control soldiers were committing atrocities.Military officials worry the hearings will draw further attention to the case, with photos and other evidence prompting anger among the Afghan civilians whose support is critical in the fight against the Taliban, The Post said. The unit was renamed the 2nd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, when it returned from Afghanistan in July, the paper noted. The father of one soldier said he repeatedly tried to alert the army after his son told him about the first killing, only to be rebuffed, The Post said.last_img read more

BCCI denies threatening IPL franchises

first_imgBCCI secretary N. Srinivasan on Monday denied sending an SMS to IPL team-owners warning them to stay away from former IPL chairman Lalit Modi. Some reports had claimed that Srinivasan sent out the warning to the franchise owners.  The alleged SMS read: “Owners should not think they are above the BCCI. You should be happy we allow you to participate. We know how to clip your wings. President and I have decided we will run the IPL the way we want to and after all it’s our property. You can either be a part of it or we can find a way for you to get out. We will throw Lalit Modi and anyone attached with him. So best avoid talking to him.”  But Srinivasan said no SMS had been sent. “The SMS was not sent from my phone. I have spoken to my service provider and they told that no such SMS was sent from my phone,” he said.  “I have filed a complaint with the police. This is mischief and they will take necessary action,” Srinivasan said.last_img read more

Women archers get silver after losing to Italy at world meet

first_imgThe Indian women’s recurve team fell at the final hurdle as they lost 207-210 to Italy and settled for a silver medal at the world archery championship in Turin (Italy) on Sunday Deepika Kumari, Chekrovolu Swuro and Laishram Bombayla Devi had a onepoint lead at the halfway stage, but let the advantage slip as the Italians went on to take the title. It was India’s maiden entry into the final of a women’s event. The maiden entry into the final seemed to weigh heavily on the minds of the Indians. They shot a disappointing third end for a score of 50 points out of a possible 60 which allowed the Italians to turn the table on their rivals with a fine round of 55.It gave the hosts a whopping four-point lead that was enough for them to clinch the final. The Indians -shooting in the order of Deepika, Chekrovolu and Bombayla -compiled 54 in the final end but fell short by three points. Italy were represented by Guendalina Sartori, Jessica Tomasi and Natalia Valeeva. Both teams were off to scratchy starts in the final and after the first end, the Indians led 51-50.The Italians managed their first 10 in their 10th shot but with two of their arrows landing out of the yellow zone in the second end, they still trailed India by one point at the half- way mark (102-103).After Sartori and Tomasi opened the third end with two 8s, former world champion Natalia Valeeva gave her team a lift with a 10. The Italians were back on track with a 10-9-10 sequence after that. With the Indian trio only managing a 50-point series at that time, the hosts reversed the score to lead by four (157-153).advertisementEven with a commanding lead, the last end was not a foregone conclusion. Before the last three arrows, the Indian team came back to within three points and even two after Sartori managed an 8.The last but one arrow was a 9 for each team and the gap remained static. As Bombayla finished with another 9 for her team, Valeeva needed an 8 to win. The experienced Italian sealed the deal with a 10 to bring the gold medal to Italy. Italy had won a silver medal in Beijing (2001) after clinching the gold in 1999 at Riom in France.India and Italy had faced off seven times before Sunday with the Europeans holding a slender 4-3 head-to-head lead.Significantly, the Italians had won the last two encounters, at Porec (Croatia) in 2010 and Shanghai at the 2009 World Cup. However, the Indians were going into the final high on confidence after their dramatic semi-final victory over world champions and favourites South Korea. Italy had beaten China in their semi-final.Korea had the consolation of the bronze medal, defeating China 222-214. The Koreans won the gold medal in the men’s team recurve event, defeating France 226-217. Italy took the bronze with a 212-210 victory over Mexico.Korea came out on top in the mixed team recurve event as well when they defeated Mexico 151-144. The bronze went to Britain, who got the better of Poland 147-139. India have reasons to be satisfied with the women’s recurve team booking a spot for the London Olympics. Jayanta Talukdar also sealed a spot in the individual recurve event.last_img read more
