Mourinho couldn’t get reaction from Man Utd players – Lascellesby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United players lost faith in former manager Jose Mourinho, according to Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles.United have won three straight games since Mourinho’s sacking.Ahead of Wednesday night’s clash with United, Lascelles said: “They probably needed that (a change at the top). They have world-class players on big wages who have done it for their countries and for other teams, but have not done it for Manchester United.”Some players can only play for certain managers and that reaction you get from the players.”Maybe (Solskjaer) might be the difference in getting the best from those players. They have a lot of quality. It will be an exciting game.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say

No.“If you lose like we’ve lost in these last two games, it’s normal. For us, this is the worst period we’ve been in, but we have to be all together and push through it.“The stuff about the squad, I know that’s not the case. But it’s natural these things will come up now because of the situation we find ourselves in.“It’s the first time that we’ve found ourselves in this position, we can’t back down from it. We’ve got to push through it.”
🅰️ @DeBruyneKev ⚽️ @sterling7 pic.twitter.com/RP0SP1Gr1p — The Emirates FA Cup (@EmiratesFACup) January 6, 2019 City fought their way back into the title race without him on Thursday night but, if they are to catch and then overtake Liverpool, they will need him for the run-in. It was fairly argued back in August that while De Bruyne is a magical player, if any squad could cope without him it would be City’s. And that proved to be the case until injuries elsewhere took their toll.Few back then expected Liverpool to be such strong and impressive challengers, either, but there can be no doubt now that City will need to be at their very best if they are to claw back this four-point deficit. And for City to be at their very best, they need De Bruyne. Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries. After the thrills and spills of Thursday night, this was a very different outing at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City, having boosted their title chances by beating Liverpool in the most dramatic of games, had a far easier time of it as they saw off Championship strugglers Rotherham United.Pep Guardiola named a strong team and it did a professional job, racking up a 3-0 lead by half-time and coasting to an eventual 7-0 victory.Guardiola is clearly taking this competition seriously and you would not be surprised if he wanted to maintain the momentum of Thursday night by ensuring things went to plan here, either. Yet whatever team he could have chosen for Sunday’s game, Kevin De Bruyne would always have been part of it. He may have missed the Liverpool game but he will be a big part of all that comes next.Guardiola suggests his injury problems could even boost City as they enter the business end of the season.”I said many times how important Kevin is for us,” the Catalan said on Sunday. “Without him last season would not have been possible. We have done incredible in terms of results. We have an opponent [Liverpool] that has done better than us. That can happen. We were two seasons without Mendy, we do not have a substitute. We were sad, he was not there but we have to carry on.”He has been out a long time but perhaps that can help us. He is going to give us extra, the creativity in the final third, the fight.”City were doing just fine without him for four of the five months he has missed this season – they were top going into December, after all – but injuries to Fernandinho and David Silva over Christmas combined to ensure the champions were not as slick up front and not as resilient at the back. They dropped points and Liverpool took advantage.De Bruyne was actually involved as City fell to their two shock defeats over Christmas, results that put them so far behind Liverpool in the title race, yet he was nowhere near fit and he was not surrounded by his two most experienced midfield accomplices.Appearances against Crystal Palace and Leicester City may not have amounted to much in terms of results but it was vital game time as the Belgian geared up to face Liverpool in what was becoming a must-win fixture.Yet another set-back, minor compared to the two knee injuries he has suffered yet serious enough for him to miss City’s last two games, ruled him out of the big clash. It has been an incredibly frustrating season for him on a personal level. As Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp plotted their moves, bringing on expensive substitutes to help wrest any kind of advantage, De Bruyne stayed out on the touchline warming up. When Guardiola finally decided to bring on Kyle Walker and Nicolas Otamendi to help deal with the Liverpool onslaught, he told his most influential player to sit back down on the bench. On Sunday, however, he was back, back in a starting line-up that could probably be trusted to win an FA Cup final, let alone a home clash against an out-of-sorts Championship side.Like previous outings this season – not just in December but at the end of October, before he picked up his second knee injury – this was just as much about getting minutes under the belt, again.A month ago City’s doctors didn’t expect him to be back to his best until February anyway, and that was before his recent set-back, so who knows when we will see the real De Bruyne. Yet there were signs on Sunday that his touch and his vision is sharpening up.He played 67 minutes against Rotherham and demonstrated those touches and passes that nobody else at City, perhaps nobody else in England, can pull off.At one point in the first half he controlled an over-hit pass with the top of his head, turned and darted past the man closing him down, free to charge into opposition territory. Unfortunately for him and anybody who would have liked to see it lead to a goal or even a chance, he proceeded to give the ball away by attempting one of his defence-splitting passes. There were plenty of other occasions when they did come off, however, and plenty more occasions when he got himself into position on the right-hand side and fired in crosses – high or low – begging to be put in the back of the net. Perhaps had Gabriel Jesus been a little sharper, they would have been. And surely in the coming months they will be. While the level of opposition has to be taken into account, De Bruyne looked far sharper here than he did against Everton in December, for example, when he came on as a substitute and was, understandably after so much time off, incredibly sloppy. That kind of performance was never on the cards and that became obvious when he weighed up his options on the edge of the box and played an inch-perfect pass to Raheem Sterling to open the scoring, and from that moment on it was a procession.Guardiola was delighted, especially so with his main man.”We spoke with him yesterday to play 65-70 minutes at ful intensity and do everything that is good for his rhythm,” he said afterwards. “He played an incredible game, created a lot of chances and he has the vision to see what other people cannot see. Last season he played an incredible number of minutes and this season it is just 400 mintues when everyone else plays 2000. Today he was our captain and he showed on the pitch why.”
GLENDALE, AZ – DECEMBER 31: Head coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes looks on against the Clemson Tigers during the 2016 PlayStation Fiesta Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium on December 31, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)Everyone is weighing in with opinions on the future of Urban Meyer as Ohio State football’s head coach following the latest news involving the scandal.Ohio State announced late on Sunday night that the investigation into Meyer and how he handled the domestic violence allegations against now-fired assistant coach Zach Smith will be completed within two weeks. Many, though, expect it to take less time. Some experts believe a decision will be made by mid-next week. One analyst, 105.7 The Zone’s Bruce Hooley, appeared on The Dan Patrick Show this morning. He offered his latest opinion on Urban Meyer’s future at Ohio State. He outlined the percentages as follows:0 percent chance Urban Meyer is fired50 percent chance Urban Meyer gets a multi-game suspension50 percent chance Urban Meyer gets no punishment at allSeveral analysts at ESPN are also starting to believe that Urban Meyer will keep his job. Paul Finebaum stated on Monday that it’s getting “pretty obvious” that Meyer will not be fired.“I think it’s pretty obvious from Ohio State realizing that the moment they put him on administrative leave it telegraphed to everyone ‘he’s done,’ to Urban realizing he had to change the narrative by issuing that statement on Friday afternoon coinciding with Zach Smith’s just purely embarrassing interview with ESPN,” Finebaum said.“And then, today, I think the betting line in Vegas is now shifting back toward Urban Meyer surviving somehow, whether it’s a two-game or four-game suspension; whether it’s a fine; whether it’s Urban Meyer sitting down with Rece (Davis) or Tom Rinaldi and crying on camera while Shelley looks at him and talks about how he’s the greatest man she’s ever known. You guys can spend plenty of time today coming up with the narrative, but I think we’ve all seen the movie before.”ESPN’s David Pollack, meanwhile, also believes that Meyer will not be fired. He sees a suspension coming for the Buckeyes’ head coach.

(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)New details from Ohio State’s investigation into Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes’ football program, regarding the handling of domestic violence allegations against now-fired assistant coach Zach Smith, emerged late on Wednesday night.ESPN college football reporter Dan Murphy reported that the Powell Police Department, which responded to domestic violence allegations against Smith but made no arrests in 2015, are being cooperative with Ohio State’s investigation. However, Powell Police are refusing to give up information from some of the files, as they are protected since Smith was never arrested. The police are helping “as much as the law will allow” but have blocked attempts from Ohio State’s investigation team to get records that are sealed. From ESPN.com:Police in Powell, Ohio, have had preliminary conversations with the investigators, according to Chief of Police Gary Vest, and are willing to help as much as the law will allow. The Powell police visited Courtney Smith’s home twice in the fall of 2015 to respond to complaints about habitual domestic violence and stalking. Neither visit resulted in an arrest or any charges against Zach Smith.Vest said he is not at liberty to share the details of what his officers discovered about those incidents in 2015 because of confidentiality laws designed to protect the identity of people accused of crimes. Because Smith was not charged with a crime as a result of those incidents, the details of what police found while responding to those cases are not public record, according to Powell’s city attorney. Vest said he also denied a request from the investigators working on behalf of Ohio State to see the same records based on advice received from the city’s attorney. If Ohio State’s current investigation team is unable to gain access to these files, you have to wonder if this affected any attempts by Ohio State to investigate claims against Smith back in 2015.Ohio State has said that its investigation into Urban Meyer should take about two weeks. It’s possible we learn something regarding his future in Columbus by next week.

While being kept by the Army cadets, the bird apparently injured a wing. The Air Force official said it is possible the bird will need to be euthanized as a result of the injury. The bird was being brought back to Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon on the football team’s charter flight, Air Force associate athletic director for communications Troy Garnhart said.Air Force said in a statement that it’s not entirely sure what the extent of the injuries are. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it seems. This type of falcon can reportedly live up to 25 years.

(Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)The much-anticipated Week 11 Monday Night Football matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs will not be played as scheduled in Mexico City.Originally slated to be played at Estadio Azteca, the game has been moved to the LA Coliseum. The reason for the change is the poor field conditions at the Mexican venue.Reports from earlier today indicated that some players were considering boycotting the game if they had to play on the shoddy grass surface.Unreal. Here’s the field in Mexico pic.twitter.com/DFPaXKfB2r— Scott Zolak (@scottzolak) November 13, 2018Since the Rams were going to give up a home game by agreeing to play in Mexico City, they get to host the contest after it was moved. That might seem like a huge disadvantage for the Chiefs, but its not like the Rams have a major home field advantage. Both teams enter the game with 9-1 records and the inside track at the No. 1 seed in their respective conferences.Monday night’s Chiefs-Rams game now is being moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles due to poor field conditions in Estadio Azteca, per sources.Back to LA for the Rams, who have been training for altitude in Colorado Springs.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) November 13, 2018Wherever this game is played, it will be a matchup of two explosive offenses led by young, star quarterbacks and coached by innovative head coaches. This is as good of a late-season showdown as you’re going to get in the NFL.In fact, it might even be a potential Super Bowl preview.
ESPNPlayers skipping bowl games has become a controversial topic in recent years, but it has become more and more of a trend. After the devastating injury to Michigan star tight end Jake Butt a few years ago, it is a legitimate concern for players with NFL aspirations. In a few weeks, West Virginia will be playing in the Camping World Bowl against Syracuse without star quarterback Will Grier. He may not be a future first rounder, but he will be one of the more interesting quarterback prospects in the draft. While most probably understand where players like Grier are coming from, the decision still drew ire from some.FOX Sports Doug Gottlieb was among those critical, saying that quarterbacks are at much less injury risk than some other players in these games. Will Grier sitting out a Bowl Game is comical. Guy can really play, but has there ever even been a QB injured in a bowl game? Stop it already— Doug Gottlieb (@GottliebShow) December 12, 2018If anything, today’s early bowl games have validated the decision that Will Grier and others have made, with injuries to star quarterbacks Mason Fine and Manny Wilkins.Fine, a prolific thrower for North Texas, was knocked out of the game against Utah State in the late first quarter. The Mean Green wound up getting drubbed 52-13, with four different UNT players throwing passes.Moments ago, Arizona State’s Manny Wilkins suffered a scary-looking injury as well. After a throw to the end zone, he was down on the field for a while. He was able to walk off on his own, but it didn’t look good.Manny Wilkins’ last game at Arizona State and he took a big shot, was able to walk off the field but went straight to the medical tent. #LasVegasBowl pic.twitter.com/6ViH1CH3uX— #NobodyDied (@ftbeard_17) December 15, 2018It is unclear how serious these injuries are, but it is obvious that quarterbacks are at plenty of risk in any game.Obviously that doesn’t mean no quarterback has anything to gain in a regular bowl game, or that more should sit out. They should be allowed to make the decision that is right for them, without ridicule.
STATE COLLEGE, PA – NOVEMBER 21: Christian Hackenberg #14 of the Penn State Nittany Lions throws a pass in the second quarter against the Michigan Wolverines at Beaver Stadium on November 21, 2015 in State College, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Evan Habeeb/Getty Images)In three years as an NFL player, Christian Hackenberg failed to take a snap in a regular season game. The former Penn State star was a second round pick by the New York Jets in the 2016 NFL Draft. He rode the bench for two years in New York, before having brief stints with the Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, and Cincinnati Bengals. Now, he’s attempting to revive his pro football career in the new Alliance of American Football. The league kicks off the weekend after the Super Bowl, and Hackenberg is reportedly the favorite to start for the Memphis Express. He’s been in a position battle with a few other prominent former college quarterbacks.LSU product and former Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger, Troy’s Brandon Silvers, and Tennessee-Martin’s Troy Cook.Per AAF reporter Dylan Carino, Christian Hackenberg is separating himself as Memphis’ starting quarterback. From AAF.com:1. Hackenberg gains lead in the QB raceThe four-man race for quarterback seems to be nearing its end with a strong performance from Christian Hackenberg against the Stallions. The Penn State product was 9 of 15 for 128 yards passing and one touchdown — a 19-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Fabian Guerra on post route up the right hash. Hackenberg had a strong grasp of the offense particularly early on, going 6 for 6 on the opening drive, which culminated with his touchdown pass.Throughout the majority of camp, it was Zach Mettenberger who had the lead in the starting quarterback race, but after Sunday, the starting role looks like Hackenberg’s to lose.Hackenberg was an all-world talent in high school, and had an extremely strong freshman season under Bill O’Brien at Penn State. He never really built on it in his two additional years though, and flamed out in the NFL.If he can get things straightened out in this new league, it’d be really good news—and publicity—for the AAF.[AAF.com]
