Upland rolls past Etiwanda

first_imgONTARIO – No band to fire up the team and fans? It was no problem for Upland as Adolph Overstreet played a tune to the Highlanders’ liking as they went on to rout Etiwanda 49-6 in a Baseline League contest Thursday night at Colony High School. Etiwanda did have some success moving the ball, with 17 first downs. But Etiwanda turned the ball over four times, including three in the first half and the Eagles repeatedly found themselves in third-and-long situations. Their opening drive ended when Brandon Fields lost a fumble at the Upland 42. Things didn’t improve much for Etiwanda. “When we fumbled on our first drive, it was like someone shot our dog,” Etiwanda coach Stephen Bryce said of the mood on the sideline. The Eagles had little success slowing down Upland in the first half, as the Highlanders scored on each of their first four possessions, including the kickoff return. “I thought we had good balance,” Salter said. “Both Allan (Denton) and (Brandon) Sellers ran hard. I was a little disappointed at times. … There’s still room for improvement.” Denton rushed for 98 yards on 15 carries, while Sellers rushed for 84 on nine carries. Each rushed for a touchdown, and Sellers also caught a touchdown pass from Bryan Harding. Harding was 8-of-15 passing for 134 yards and two touchdowns, with two first-half interceptions. Both of those interceptions came in the second quarter by Kameron Hamilton. But the Eagles turned it right over both times, with David Vazquez throwing a pair of interceptions including one by Cedric Ibeanusi, who returned 26 yards for a touchdown to give the Highlanders a 35-0 halftime lead. Etiwanda was playing without starting running back Allyn Fontenot, who dislocated his elbow in last week’s loss to Claremont. But Bryce wouldn’t use Fontenot’s absence as an excuse. “We’ve had personnel ready to step into that role,” Bryce said. Sophomore Dwayne Stallion rushed for a game-high 113 yards on 18 carries for Etiwanda. Bryce said he started trying to forget about this game pretty early. “I told the kids at halftime to forget the first half and play like it was 0-0,” he said. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Their kicker had been getting a lot of kickoffs into the end zone.” last_img read more
