A large-scale urban renewal project is in progress in the Reimerswaalbuurt in Osdorp, a neighborhood situated at the periphery of Amsterdam. The ambitious plan was made under the supervision of the Architecten Cie. Nine building complexes will be realized with broad streets and auto-free squares. Mecanoo designed the first complex which includes a school, sports hall, pre-school playrooms, a children’s day-care center, a community center, 51 apartments and 21 single family homes. The neighborhood will be enriched with good social housing situated in a network of pleasant and safe streets, squares and public green space with gathering places to socialize in. The result of the fruitful cooperation between the developer Ymere, the school board, design studio Makkink & Bey and artist Elspeth Pikaar is a richly detailed social housing and multi-functional education complex. Mecanoo’s design example will set the stage for the other eight residential complexes.Save this picture!Courtesy of mecanooCommunity and social functions are located on the ground level of the complex. The entrances to the school, pre-school playrooms, children’s day-care center and apartments are located at the highly accessible Osdorper Ban. The building slopes down from 6 levels to three on the north side and connects beautifully with the complex (to be built) on the northwest side. The northwest side of the complex opens up to the green courtyard, which is the domain of both residents and pupils of the school. Situated in the four levels above the school are 51 apartments, of which 16 are designated for people with mild physical handicaps. The quieter, north side of the complex houses 21 single family homes. Save this picture!Courtesy of mecanooThe main (glass) entrance of St. Lukas offers a transparent view to a large courtyard in the back. A second entrance is located on the courtyard’s raised square and is accessible via a whimsical design fence by Studio Makkink & Bey. An exceptional façade was created in cooperation with the artist, Elspeth Pikaar. She asked the pupils of St. Lukas to write texts and make drawings; these were then processed in large glass panels. The panels form a ribbon around the building and bring into picture the progression of study years at the school. The artwork shows the pupils’ sense of connection with their school and neighborhood. The interior of the school is meticulous in its child-friendly detailing, and a fresh colour green is deftly applied throughout the entire building and the classrooms.Save this picture!Courtesy of mecanooProject gallerySee allShow lessIn Progress: Taiyuan Museum / Preston Scott CohenArticlesVideo: Football for HopeArticlesProject locationAddress:Osdorp, NetherlandsLocation to be used only as a reference. Navy Divers Lay Wreath at USS Houston Wreck Site

first_img View post tag: DIVERS View post tag: Wreath View post tag: asia June 13, 2014 View post tag: Naval The commemoration ceremony occurred mid-way through a 5-day bilateral diving exercise as part of the 2014 convening of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT).“It is an honor to pay tribute to these service members who lost their lives on the USS Houston and remember their sacrifice. Our partnership with the Indonesian Navy to work together in surveying the USS Houston site will assist in preserving the remains of the USS Houston and her crew,” Deputy Chief of Mission Bauer said.Houston was sunk during the World War II Battle of Sunda Strait Feb. 28, 1942, with the loss of more than seven hundred souls. The ship remains sovereign property of the United States under customary international law, and is a popular dive site. Houston is located off the west coast of Java, Indonesia, one of nine partner nations participating in CARAT 2014.Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit divers embarked on Safeguard began surveying the wreck Monday, June 9. They are aided by Dr. Alexis Catsambis, an underwater archaeologist from the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), who provides operations planning support in order for the mission to effectively document the state of preservation of Houston. Documentation methods include inspections by surface supplied divers, sonar sensing systems and a remotely operated vehicle. In its 20th year, CARAT, which continues through late 2014, is a bilateral exercise series designed to address shared maritime security priorities and concerns, strengthen navy-to-navy relationships and enhance interoperability among participating forces. The Indonesian Navy has been part of the exercise since it began in 1995, and this year’s CARAT diving exercise is just one aspect of ongoing navy-to-navy cooperation.[mappress]Press Release, June 13, 2014; Image: US Navy View post tag: Lay Back to overview,Home naval-today Navy Divers Lay Wreath at USS Houston Wreck Site Authorities Deputy Chief of Mission Kristen Bauer, U.S. Embassy Jakarta, joined U.S. and Indonesian navy divers on board the USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50) to lay a wreath at the site of the USS Houston (CA 30), June 11. PELATH ON STATE OF STATE: IS GOVERNOR ON BOARD FOR TAX INCREASES? HARD TO…

first_imgFacebookTwitterCopy LinkEmailShare INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath from Michigan City today issued the following statement after Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb gave his first State of the State address:“While Republicans in the Legislature are calling for new taxes on Hoosier motorists, it seems our governor is not yet ready to embrace their plan.“The success of any program as massive as this depends on the governor’s ability to sell it to Hoosiers. From what we have seen tonight, it does not appear he is ready to accept that role.“This is the dilemma facing his party. Too many House and Senate Republicans have preached for years that taxes cannot be raised for any reason. Candidly, they have effectively convinced many voters of this as well.“Republicans may be disagreeing with each other before they get around to disagreeing with Democrats.“Truth be told, this is a time for questions. Indiana House Democrats remain wary of calls for sacrifices that are not shared, particularly at a time when these same leaders keep state budget surpluses at impossibly high levels AND cut taxes for corporations, special interests, and the very wealthy.“There is a lot of pleading that must be done to make legislators on both sides of the aisle believe that we should be raising taxes. After tonight’s speech, it remains to be seen what role the governor will play in the debate.“As for the governor’s other proposals, there is much to support in the call for improving the skills of our workforce, but we are simply too timid in our approach to pre-K. The need is obvious enough that we do not have to fiddle with gradual expansions of pilot projects that ignore most of the state.“And when it comes to K-12, there simply isn’t enough of a recognition that we have been slowly starving our public schools of the funds they need to meet their constitutionally-required mandate to educate all children. At some point in time, we have to stop continually throwing money at a laboratory for vouchers and charters, and remind ourselves that we need to look out for all schoolchildren.“Indiana House Democrats will be there to offer advice as Republicans work through their internal debates, particularly when it comes to tax hikes. There are alternatives that don’t ask more from the unconnected.”last_img read more
