June 20, 2020 — A group of Black Major League Soccer players has formed a coalition to address systematic racism in their communities and bring about change within the league. The coalition is the result of an Instagram group that began after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, which spawned a wave of nationwide protests against racism and policy brutality. Started by Toronto FC defender Justin Morrow, the group grew to some 70 MLS players, who decided to act and the Black Players Coalition of MLS was born. — The NCAA is expanding its policy banning states with prominent Confederate symbols from hosting its sponsored events. The current ban, in place since 2001, prevents states from hosting what the NCAA calls predetermined sites, such as men’s basketball tournament games. Mississippi is the only state currently affected by the policy. The expanded policy means that even when sites of games are determined by performance as they are in sports such as baseball and women’s basketball, Mississippi schools will not be permitted to host NCAA tournament games.NFL-NEWS49ers wide receiver Richie James Jr. breaks right wristUNDATED (AP) — San Francisco 49ers receiver Richie James Jr. has broken his right wrist during offseason workouts and won’t be ready to return to the field until after the start of training camp. The NFL is still deep into the offseason with preseason games not scheduled to begin for another two months. — An unidentified San Francisco 49ers player has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 after an informal workout with teammates in Tennessee. The NFL Network reported that one player who took part in the workouts this week in Nashville has tested positive. All the players who were there will now get tested to see if there is any spread. The team declined to comment, citing federal and state privacy laws about the personal health of employees.— The Tampa Bay Lightning closed their facilities Thursday after five team employees tested positive for the coronavirus, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person tells The Associated Press the team and the NHL haven’t announced the closure. The NHL is also no longer announcing which teams’ individual players tested positive. The developments come some two weeks after players could return to their respective facilities to take part in voluntary on- and off-ice workouts.— Canada has approved a National Hockey League plan to play in Canada amid the coronavirus pandemic. The plan required an exemption as the U.S.-Canada border is currently closed to all non-essential travel until at least July 21 and those who enter Canada must self-isolate for 14 days. The league plans to have training camps open in July and to play games without spectators in a couple of cities in late July or August. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says Canada’s top public health officer as well as the top health officers of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Toronto worked closely with the NHL to approve the plan.— A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that Albert Pujols (POO’-hohlz) will pay the salaries of the Los Angeles Angels’ furloughed employees in his native Dominican Republic for five months. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Pujols didn’t publicly announce his commitment to pay roughly $180,000 to cover the salaries. The strict budget cuts made by Angels’ owner Arte Moreno during the coronavirus pandemic have included extensive furloughs for scouts, player development staff and minor league employees.— The Chinese basketball league has restarted after an almost five-month shutdown for the coronavirus pandemic but is going ahead in empty stadiums and with fewer foreign players. The CBA was suspended on Jan. 24 after the virus outbreak in Wuhan. The semifinals stage has started with 20 teams divided into two divisions and limited venues to reduce travel. All stadiums are closed to fans. League chairman and former NBA star Yao Ming praised the work of the clubs and health authorities for helping get the season restarted. AMERICA PROTESTS-SPORTSTwins remove ex-owner Griffith statue over racist remarksUNDATED (AP) — The Minnesota Twins have removed a statue of former owner Calvin Griffith at Target Field, citing racist remarks he made in 1978.Griffith’s statue was one of several installed when the team opened its ballpark in 2010. Griffith moved the Washington Senators to Minnesota for the 1961 season, and the team was renamed the Twins. During a 1978 speech to a Waseca Lions club, Griffith said he decided to make the move when he found out there only had 15,000 blacks there. The team says it “cannot remain silent and continue ignoring the racist comments he made in Waseca.”Spokesman Dustin Morse said the removal was an internal decision, but the team had “certainly heard from outside fans and the community over the years” about Griffith’s remarks. The Astros lost their first- and second-round picks this year as part of the penalty issued by Major League Baseball for their sign-stealing scandal.TRANSGENDER-SPORTS BAN-IDAHO-LAWSUITTrump administration backs Idaho transgender sports banBOISE, Idaho (AP) — A recently passed Idaho law banning transgender women from competing in women’s sports — the first such law in the nation — received backing on Friday from the administration of President Donald Trump. The support came in the form of a court filing submitted by the U.S. Department of Justice, saying a federal judge considering a lawsuit challenging the ban should conclude that the law does not violate the U.S. Constitution. The closures come while MLB owners and players try to negotiate a deal to begin the season and raise the possibility the virus outbreak could scuttle all attempts at starting up this year.A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press the spring complexes in Florida and Arizona will temporarily close because of recent events. Extra innings that start with runners on second base, games ending in ties and re-entry are among the possibilities. And the season may be limited to a maximum 60 games by teams that claim they can’t afford more due to the coronavirus pandemic. MLB included the controversial extra-inning runner rule in its proposal Wednesday for a 60-game season, down from an initial 82, and also wants it for 2021. The players’ association accepted the rule Thursday for 2020 only in its counterproposal for 70 games, down from an initial 114.— Five-time PGA Tour winner Nick Watney tested positive Friday for the coronavirus, the first player with a confirmed infection since golf resumed its schedule last week. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has approved a comprehensive action plan submitted by the track to allow fans for the July 19 race. While the state allows 50% capacity for outdoor sporting events, track president Eddie Gossage says it’s too early to know how many fans will be able to attend. With social distancing protocols in place, the speedway first must reassign seating for people who had already purchased tickets for the race that was originally scheduled for March 29. The track capacity is about 135,000. Under the headline, “Change the name of the Washington NFL team. Now,” the newspaper says in an editorial posted online Friday that if Snyder won’t switch the nickname, the professional football league itself ought to do so. The Post says, “This should be an easy call” and urges Snyder or the NFL to “get on the right side of history.” Snyder has owned the team since 1999 and steadfastly refused to consider a change to the nickname.— The agency that manages RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., removed a statue of George Preston Marshall, who moved the team from Boston to Washington. Marshall resisted integrating the team with Black players until “forced to do so” in 1962, according to his biography on the Pro Football Hall of Fame website. The Citizens have drawn just one of their opening 11 matches of the season, winning their last nine scoring an average of 3goal per match. That change precipitated a record-breaking 11-match unbeaten that sent them to the Premier League’s Summit and there’s a possibility of no looking back. They are one of the few clubs in Europe to boast of an unbeaten streak this season.Indeed, Pep Guardiola Team have been topping the table ever since their city rival; Manchester United draw a game against Liverpool.Spurs, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal will try making a decent fist of challenging Manchester City stronghold on top spot but history suggests the leader were never going to give it up easily yet.Stats from five seasons now have it that a club that tops till the end of the Christmas fixtures have always had their way to win the League. Giulia Gwinn fired the only goal of the game through a forest of Chinese defenders.Rennes, France | AFP | The women’s World Cup moved up a gear on Saturday with three matches including a narrow German victory over China that left the winners complaining that they were roughed up, but Sunday’s three-match programme finishes with a new chapter in the oldest international football rivalry, as England take on Scotland in Nice.Germany beat China 1-0 in Rennes on Saturday with a 66th-minute goal by 19-year-old Giulia Gwinn.Later, Spain came from behind against first-time participants South Africa to win 3-1 and join Germany at the top of Group B.In the evening, Norway found there is life after Ada Hegerberg, scoring three times in 20 minutes in the middle of the first half to beat Nigeria 3-0 in Group A.The Germans complained that the Chinese had aimed for their ankles.“They were often late in the tackles and kept catching our feet,” said German captain Alexandra Popp.Coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg said she had not been sure at one stage if star Dzsenifer Marozsan would finish the match.“A lot of our players were caught on the ankle today, and it doesn’t look good for some of them. What Dzseni Marozsan suffered today was brutal.”“We were a little surprised by the assertive approach of the Chinese, but it’s a competitive game, not a friendly,” she said.In Le Havre, South Africa took a shock lead with their first ever shot on target at a Women’s World Cup when Thembi Kgatlana, who plays for Beijing BG Phoenix in China, curled a right-foot shot into the top corner in the 25th minute.Spain dominated possession, but needed 69th and 82nd-minute penalties, both converted by Jennifer Hermoso, to regain control of the game.Guro Reiten scored Norway’s first goal and gave a player-of-the-match display to suggest Norway can thrive without Lyon striker Hegerberg who refused to come to the tournament.“I don’t think I have played better,” Reiten said. The victory puts Norway level with France at the top of Group A. On Sunday evening, England and Scotland meet for the first time in a Women’s World Cup.– Pressure and expectation –England lost in the semi-finals in 2015 and at Euro 2017 but those runs attracted attention and they won the prestigious SheBelieves Cup in the United States earlier this year.“For us as players, we know that there is a lot more interest in our team, and obviously with the results and the success that we have had with the SheBelieves, of course that brings a little bit of pressure and a little bit of expectation,” said the captain, Steph Houghton.Scotland kick off their first World Cup match with memories still fresh from their 6-0 humbling at the hands of England at Euro 2017.The Scots are much-changed since the 2017 humiliation. Former Arsenal boss Shelley Kerr has taken over as coach and key players who missed that game are set to feature this time.“Probably of all the teams we’ve got in the group stages this is our toughest game by far. I think Scotland can go a long way in the competition with the quality they’ve got,” said England coach Phil Neville, even though Group D also contains Japan, winners in 2011 and England’s semi-final conquerors four years ago.Leading Scotland into a World Cup puts Kerr in a privileged position. After all, the men have not been to a major tournament since 1998.“Obviously it is our first World Cup, we are the first Scottish team to play at a World Cup for over two decades,” said Kerr.Earlier on Sunday, there are two games in Group C.Australia, a constant force in women’s football take on a rising power, Italy, in Valenciennes. Then the Samba football of Brazil encounters the Reggae Girlz of Jamaica in Grenoble. During Wednesday’s press conference at Florida’s Logistics Response Center in Orlando, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, said that he has no plans to issue a stay-at-home order for the entire state of Florida to combat the spread of the coronavirus.“There’s certain parts of the state where you have more sporadic cases,””To order someone not to be able to earn a paycheck when them going to work is not going to have any effect on what we’re doing with the virus, that is something that I think is inappropriate.” Gov. DeSantis said.DeSantis said the federal government has supported his decision.DeSantis said that the areas in the state with the highest number of coronavirus cases (Miami-Dade County) have already issued stay-at-home orders. The massive stay-at-home order in the state of New York, forced thousands of residents to flee the state, with some of them coming to Florida governor DeSantis said. He also mentioned that the order in California caused the residents to go out and party, or go to the beach. Gov. DeSantis said “You’re probably less dangerous driving your car to the office then being with crowds of hundreds of people. So you just gotta think it through,”During the press conference the governor also stressed that anyone 65 or older, or those with underlying medical conditions, should self-isolate at home for 14 days.
Vibration-powered generating batteries recharge when shaken (Phys.org) —Ann Makosinski from Victoria, British Columbia, has an LED flashlight powered by body heat. This inventor has a flashlight that glows when she holds it. The story gets more interesting, though. She is 15 years old and her flashlight has got her into the finalist ranks for the Google Science Fair. Her work is a result of a general interest in alternative energy. She said that she is “really interested in harvesting surplus energy, energy that surrounds but we never really use.” Enter the Hollow Flashlight, which works according to the thermoelectric effect—creating electric voltage out of temperature difference. As a Grade 10 student at St. Michaels University School in Victoria, she was deciding on a topic for a science project when she discovered the Peltier tile, producing electricity when one side of the tile is heated while the other side is cooled. More information: Google Science Fair project Citation: Student’s flashlight works by body heat, not batteries (2013, July 1) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2013-07-student-flashlight-body-batteries.html “Using four Peltier tiles and the temperature difference between the palm of the hand and ambient air, ” she said in her project statement, “I designed a flashlight that provides bright light without batteries or moving parts. My design is ergonomic, thermodynamically efficient, and only needs a five degree temperature difference to work and produce up to 5.4 mW at 5 foot candles of brightness.”She ran some calculations to see if the warmth from a human hand could generate enough energy via a tile to power a flashlight. She presented her hypothesis:” If I can capture enough heat from a human hand and convert it efficiently to electricity, then I can power a flashlight without any batteries or kinetic energy.” She presented her objective: “To make a flashlight that runs on the heat of the human hand.”To begin, she bought Peltier tiles and tested them to see if they could produce sufficient power to light an LED. The power was no problem but getting the needed voltage was, as the tiles did not generate enough of the voltage needed. As she learned, making some changes to the circuit design might turn a page. She used the Internet for information, experimented with different circuits, and got lucky, finding an energy-harvesting article on the Internet that made note of a circuit that could provide enough voltage when used with a recommended transformer. She talked about a point where she realized her battery-free flashlight could behave as she had hoped: “The final design included mounting the Peltiers on a hollow aluminum tube which was inserted in a larger PVC pipe with an opening that allowed ambient air to cool the tube. The palm wrapped around a cutout in the PVC pipe and warmed the tiles. The result was a bright light at 5 degree Celcius [sic] of Peltier differential. The flashlight worked!” In conclusion, she said, she succeeded in powering a flashlight using only the heat of the hand. Out of two flashlights that she made, neither which needed batteries, they worked. Materials for the flashlight project cost her $26. Considering that the effort has qualified her as a finalist in the Google Science Fair, where 15 finalists from around the world are competing for the prizes, that is not an unwise investment. The top winner gets a $50,000 scholarship and trip to the Galapagos Islands. The prize ceremony takes place in September. Winners will be chosen in different age categories—13-14, 15-16, 17-18. © 2013 Phys.org Explore further This document is subject to copyright. Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now 4 min read May 22, 2015 I spend a lot of time working in and around early stage startups that have figured out how to bootstrap their way through early IT needs. The good news is that technology has advanced to a point where many of the early needs are ready to be simply plugged into your site. In fact, I feel so strongly about the current ability to put plug-and-play technologies to use, that I’ve written about it quite frequently and have practiced it for the last year and a half with BottleKeeper. However, there does come a time when, well, you’re in over your head and need to bring in the seasoned IT professionals. “When” is a question that is and can only be appropriate for your business, but let’s look at a few warning signs that you need help sooner than later.1. The site crashes and you don’t have a clue where to start.Having your website go down is one of the most terrifying and frustrating things imaginable as a new company. The good news is that it’s not typically going to happen early on because you’re not driving enough traffic to really push the system. The bad news is that it’s inevitable once you are driving real traffic, which is precisely when you need to site up and running most.Related: 9 Tips to Make Your Ecommerce Business Wildly SuccessfulEarly on the fix can be as easy as calling your hosting provider to get help, but as your site grows and you plug more necessary components into it, things get a lot more complicated. As you grow, you’ll likely need to move away from early stage host providers such as GoDaddy — which are great because they’re inexpensive — into larger, more flexible and scalable systems such as Rackspace. This does come with an enormous technical learning curve as all of the pretty interfaces and help screens go out the window. You’re now in the proverbial “big leagues”.2. You don’t know what FTP means. In reality, FTP — or file transfer protocol — is quite simple, but requires you to have an understanding of the framework that the consumer facing aspect of your site is built on. This starts with your root folder and goes down through content, themes, cache, plugins and a litany of additional necessary files and folders. The positive aspect is that it’s not super complicated to figure out, the negative is that if you do something wrong, you might kill your site — possibly irreparably if you don’t have the appropriate backups, which would result in a complete restart.
