By Dialogo April 16, 2010 What we want to know is what kind of substances and drugs can stimulate the WNT pathway to promote the growth of follicles and solve the baldness problem. There are no known substances or drugs that can block the gene that causes baldness or silence it through epigenetic substances. The WNT pathway is one that may be linked to prostate cancer. Researchers have identified a new gene involved in hair growth, a discovery that may open the way to future treatments for male-pattern baldness and other forms of hair loss, according to a study published in the journal Nature. The team, led by Angela Christiano (Columbia University, United States), identified a gene called APCDD1 that causes a rare form of hair loss, hereditary hypotrichosis simplex. This disease is the result of hair-follicle miniaturization, a process also observed in male-pattern baldness: individual hairs are increasingly thinner. “The identification of this gene underlying hereditary hypotrichosis simplex has afforded us an opportunity to gain insight into the process of hair-follicle miniaturization, which is most commonly observed in male-pattern hair loss,” Angela Christiano indicated. Nevertheless, “it is important to note that while these two conditions share the same physiologic process, the gene we discovered for hereditary hypotrichosis does not explain the complex process of male-pattern baldness,” she added. The identification of the APCDD1 gene was possible thanks to the analysis of the genetic data of a number of Pakistani and Italian families who carry the gene that causes hereditary hypotrichosis simplex. The researchers discovered a mutation in the APCDD1 gene, located in a region of chromosome 18, which has been suggested by previous studies to be involved in other forms of hair loss. The researchers showed that the APCDD1 gene inhibits a cellular signaling pathway known as Wnt, the role of which in the control of hair growth has been demonstrated in mice. “These findings suggest that manipulating the Wnt pathway may have an effect on hair-follicle growth – for the first time, in humans,” Angela Christiano declared.
However, Dylan Haney scored late in the second frame to cut the advantage to 3-2.Rylan Smaha-Muir tied the game on the power play midway through the third period before Hascarl completed the rally.Chad Grambo scored the other goal for Grand Forks, winners of two straight games.Grand Forks out shot the Leafs 26-20 in the contest.Bruins’ netminder Anthony Galliart won for the third straight time against the Leafs while Zakery Babin, making his second start for Nelson, took the loss in goal.Babin was acquired earlier this month in a deal with the Princeton Posse.Nelson travels to the Hawks Nest to meet Murdoch leading Beaver Valley Friday in Fruitvale before returning home to host former Leaf netminder Brett Soles and the Osoyoos Coyotes Saturday at 7 p.m. in the NDCC Arena. The Hawks routed Spokane 8-2 Tuesday in Fruitvale to move into a first-place tie with Castlegar in Murdoch Division standings.Beaver Valley has two games in hand on the Rebels. The Grand Forks Border Bruins rallied from a two-goal deficit to edge the Nelson Leafs 4-3 in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play Tuesday night in the Boundary City. The loss continues the recent slide of the Heritage City franchise, losers of five consecutive games and 12 of 14 games dating back to October 31.Logan Hascarl scored with five minutes remaining in the third period to complete the comeback and give the Bruins its third consecutive win over the Leafs in the battle of the two Murdoch Division rivals.Grand Forks also builds a three-point lead over the Leafs for third spot in Murdoch standings.Goals by Sam Weber, Austin Anselmo and Aigne McGeady-Bruce built a 3-1 lead for the Leafs less than a minute into the second period.
WHEN HE TRIED – and failed in spectacular fashion it must be said – with an overhead kick in the pre-match warm-up, Finn Harps mascot Harper probably knew it wasn’t going to be his night, writes Alan Foley.Harper was on the field ahead of Harps’ Premier Division fixture against Sligo Rovers at Finn Park last night and tried to meet a deft cross with an audacious effort – only to land flat on his face. Laugher rolled in from the terraces as Harper, showing pride over pain, jumped to his feet to give a wave of acknowledgment despite not getting a chance to show his Pedigree, Chum. Then, 27 minutes into the match with the score still 0-0, match referee Tommy Connolly stopped play and told a steward at the Town End of Finn Park to remove poor Harper, who was motioning to make saves behind the Rovers goal, which was being marshalled by Ed McGinty, a Motherwell native whose family come from Ballyshannon. Ruff justice indeed, although the steward did not lay a paw on him. After declaring his innocence and shrugging his shoulders a few times, poor Harper was removed from the end-line, much to the disappointment of both sets of supporters, who barked his innocence.Nathan Boyle, a minute later, scored the first of his two goals in Harps’ 2-0 win, although Twitter did show some sympathy for poor Harper, who may or may not be suspended for Monday’s visit of Cork City.Who ever said it’s a dog’s life? @alimason Noticed your comment on a post last night. Mourinho couldn’t get reaction from Man Utd players – Lascellesby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United players lost faith in former manager Jose Mourinho, according to Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles.United have won three straight games since Mourinho’s sacking.Ahead of Wednesday night’s clash with United, Lascelles said: “They probably needed that (a change at the top). They have world-class players on big wages who have done it for their countries and for other teams, but have not done it for Manchester United.”Some players can only play for certain managers and that reaction you get from the players.”Maybe (Solskjaer) might be the difference in getting the best from those players. They have a lot of quality. It will be an exciting game.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say

These two bulkers are also set to join their new owner in October-November 2019 and March-April 2020.The three 2015-built ships are currently under long-term time charter to Pacific Basin, with one charter deal expiring in October 2019 and two expiring in 2022. The purchase of these vessels will replace the company’s charter costs “with significantly lower owned vessel cash costs”.The consideration will take the form of 105,9 million new Pacific Basin shares to be issued to the ships’ sellers amounting to USD 24.37 million in aggregate, and USD 49.47 million to be funded from the group’s cash. The new shares to be issued will in aggregate represent 2.22% of Pacific Basin’s enlarged issued share capital after the allotment and issue of all these new shares. The issue price of HKD 1.80 per new share issued to the ships’ sellers represents a premium of 5.94% to the average closing price for the last ten trading days.“Consistent with our previously stated goal of looking opportunistically but cautiously at acquiring good quality secondhand ships, these ship purchases represent another attractive opportunity to grow and renew our fleet with modern, efficient vessels built by large, reputable shipbuilders Shikoku, Tsuneishi and Imabari,” Mats Berglund, CEO of Pacific Basin, said.
