New Gene Responsible for Male-Pattern Baldness Identified

first_imgBy Dialogo April 16, 2010 What we want to know is what kind of substances and drugs can stimulate the WNT pathway to promote the growth of follicles and solve the baldness problem. There are no known substances or drugs that can block the gene that causes baldness or silence it through epigenetic substances. The WNT pathway is one that may be linked to prostate cancer. Researchers have identified a new gene involved in hair growth, a discovery that may open the way to future treatments for male-pattern baldness and other forms of hair loss, according to a study published in the journal Nature. The team, led by Angela Christiano (Columbia University, United States), identified a gene called APCDD1 that causes a rare form of hair loss, hereditary hypotrichosis simplex. This disease is the result of hair-follicle miniaturization, a process also observed in male-pattern baldness: individual hairs are increasingly thinner. “The identification of this gene underlying hereditary hypotrichosis simplex has afforded us an opportunity to gain insight into the process of hair-follicle miniaturization, which is most commonly observed in male-pattern hair loss,” Angela Christiano indicated. Nevertheless, “it is important to note that while these two conditions share the same physiologic process, the gene we discovered for hereditary hypotrichosis does not explain the complex process of male-pattern baldness,” she added. The identification of the APCDD1 gene was possible thanks to the analysis of the genetic data of a number of Pakistani and Italian families who carry the gene that causes hereditary hypotrichosis simplex. The researchers discovered a mutation in the APCDD1 gene, located in a region of chromosome 18, which has been suggested by previous studies to be involved in other forms of hair loss. The researchers showed that the APCDD1 gene inhibits a cellular signaling pathway known as Wnt, the role of which in the control of hair growth has been demonstrated in mice. “These findings suggest that manipulating the Wnt pathway may have an effect on hair-follicle growth – for the first time, in humans,” Angela Christiano declared.last_img read more

STRONACH’S HOMEBRED SHAMAN GHOST OVERHAULS MIDNIGHT GHOST TO WIN GRADE I, $750,000 SANTA ANITA HANDICAP BY THREE QUARTERS OF A LENGTH UNDER CASTELLANO; JERKENS TRAINEE GETS 1 ¼ MILES IN 2:01.57

first_imgARCADIA, Calif. (AP) _ Shaman Ghost beat Midnight Storm by three-quarters of a length to win the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap on Saturday.Ridden by Javier Castellano, Shaman Ghost ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.57 and paid $4.60, $2.60 and $2.40 as the 6-5 favorite.Owner-breeder Frank Stronach was on hand to see his 5-year-old horse win a big race at Santa Anita, which Stronach also owns. Last November, Shaman Ghost was scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Classic on race day at the track after falling ill.Stronach won his third Big `Cap; Milwaukee Brew won in 2002 and ’03.“I was kind of sitting there quiet (watching the race),” he said. “He’s had a lot of bad racing luck and he’s better than what he has shown. Today it all worked out.”In January, Shaman Ghost finished second to Eclipse Award winner Arrogate in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park, another Stronach-owned track.Midnight Storm returned $3 and $2.80 after winning six of his previous seven starts. Follow Me Crev was another 4 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $5 to show.“It was the first time running the mile and a quarter on dirt,” said Rafael Bejarano, who rode Midnight Storm. “He did a really good job.”After shipping in from Florida, Shaman Ghost stalked the pace in third before drifting out to the middle of the track in the stretch run before gaining the lead under Castellano’s urging in front of 29,412 on an unusually hot day.“I knew I had it won at the eighth pole,” Castellano said. “I asked him for full speed at the eighth pole and he gave it to me right away. I said, `Yes!’”Like Stronach, winning trainer Jimmy Jerkens also found some luck at Santa Anita. A year ago, he brought Effinex to the track for the Big `Cap only to have the horse finish third as the favorite after coming down with hives.Castellano moved Shaman Ghost to the outside, away from dirt flying in his face, as they turned for home.“He’s been showing up in all of his races,” Jerkens said, “so I think he should get some respect now.”The victory, worth $450,000, increased Shaman Ghost’s career earnings to $3,539,311, with seven wins in 15 starts.“With not a lot of speed in the race, I had to ask him a little, put him really close to the pace and he responded,” Castellano said. “Very classy horse.”The race was missing two big names among older horses: Arrogate and Hoppertunity. Both are set to run in Dubai later this month.Argentina-bred Hi Happy was fourth, followed by Isotherm, Hard Aces, Twentytwentyvision, Gangster and Imperative. In other stakes:_ Bal a Bali won the $400,345 Frank E. Kilroe Mile by a head over defending champion What a View.Ridden by Castellano, Brazil-bred Bal a Bali ran the distance in 1:33.86 and paid $22.20. He finished third last year.Dortmund was last in the six-horse field in his turf debut for trainer Art Sherman, extending his losing skid to five races dating to last year. Dortmund was previously trained by Bob Baffert before he and owner Kaleem Shah split._ Denman’s Call won the $400,690 Triple Bend Stakes by a length in an upset over 1-2 favorite Masochistic.Ridden by Tyler Baze, Denman’s Call ran seven furlongs in 1:20.94 and paid $35.40 to win.Masochistic won the race two years ago. He was making his first start since finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint last November and later being disqualified from the $255,000 purse money for testing positive for a steroid. Ruff justice for Finn Harps mascot Harper following his dismissal against Sligo Rovers

first_imgWHEN HE TRIED – and failed in spectacular fashion it must be said – with an overhead kick in the pre-match warm-up, Finn Harps mascot Harper probably knew it wasn’t going to be his night, writes Alan Foley.Harper was on the field ahead of Harps’ Premier Division fixture against Sligo Rovers at Finn Park last night and tried to meet a deft cross with an audacious  effort – only to land flat on his face. Laugher rolled in from the terraces as Harper, showing pride over pain, jumped to his feet to give a wave of acknowledgment despite not getting a chance to show his Pedigree, Chum. Then, 27 minutes into the match with the score still 0-0, match referee Tommy Connolly stopped play and told a steward at the Town End of Finn Park to remove poor Harper, who was motioning to make saves behind the Rovers goal, which was being marshalled by Ed McGinty, a Motherwell native whose family come from Ballyshannon. Ruff justice indeed, although the steward did not lay a paw on him. After declaring his innocence and shrugging his shoulders a few times, poor Harper was removed from the end-line, much to the disappointment of both sets of supporters, who barked his innocence.Nathan Boyle, a minute later, scored the first of his two goals in Harps’ 2-0 win, although Twitter did show some sympathy for poor Harper, who may or may not be suspended for Monday’s visit of Cork City.Who ever said it’s a dog’s life? @alimason Noticed your comment on a post last night. These two bulkers are also set to join their new owner in October-November 2019 and March-April 2020.The three 2015-built ships are currently under long-term time charter to Pacific Basin, with one charter deal expiring in October 2019 and two expiring in 2022. The purchase of these vessels will replace the company’s charter costs “with significantly lower owned vessel cash costs”.The consideration will take the form of 105,9 million new Pacific Basin shares to be issued to the ships’ sellers amounting to USD 24.37 million in aggregate, and USD 49.47 million to be funded from the group’s cash. The new shares to be issued will in aggregate represent 2.22% of Pacific Basin’s enlarged issued share capital after the allotment and issue of all these new shares.
