(AP Photo/Isaac Brekken, File)LAS VEGAS — The start line for the upcoming Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon has been moved away from the site of the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history, organizers said Friday. The Nov. 12 evening race will start in front of the New York-New York resort on the Las Vegas Strip, about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of last year’s start near the Mandalay Bay hotel, Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon series executive Josh Furlow said.ADVERTISEMENT The Mandalay Bay was the hotel from which a gunman on the 32nd floor fired assault-style weapons Oct. 1 into a country music concert crowd of about 22,000 people, killing 58 and injuring almost 550.After using that same open-air festival ground for pre-race activities the last several years, the gathering spot for this year’s marathon and half-marathon will be between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo casinos and the T-Mobile Arena, said Dan Cruz, spokesman for race organizer The Competitor Group.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutThe overall 26.2-mile (42-kilometer) marathon and 13.1-mile (21-kilometer) half-marathon courses are still being finalized, Cruz said. In one of the grisliest accusations levelled against American troops in Afghanistan, a group of US soldiers has been accused of randomly killing Afghan civilians for sport and then keeping their body parts as trophies. The killings are alleged to have been carried out by rogue members of a platoon from the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division based in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, The Washington Post reported on Sunday, citing army legal documents and interviews with the people involved. The deadly ‘ game’ was set in motion in January, when an Afghan man approached the soldiers in the La Mohammed Kalay village, the report said.As the man neared, one soldier tossed a grenade on the groung to create the ruse that the group was under attack, prompting the others to open fire and kill the civilian, the paper noted.According to The Post , the unprovoked attack on January 15 was the start of a shooting spree against Afghan civilians.Members of the platoon have been charged with dismembering and photographing corpses, as well as hoarding a skull and other human bones, the report said.Military documents allege that five members of the unit staged three murders in Kandahar between January and May, the paper noted.Seven other soldiers have been charged with crimes related to the case, including the use of hashish , attempts to impede the investigation and a retaliatory gang assault on a private who blew the whistle, according to The Post . Army officials have not disclosed a motive for the killings, the report said.advertisementBut a review of military court documents and interviews with people familiar with the investigation suggest the soldiers, fuelled by hashish and alcohol, commited the killings essentially for sport, the paper said. The accused deny any wrongdoing, The Post said but noted that the case has already been marked by a cycle of accusations and counter- accusations among the defendants as they seek to pin the blame on each other. While the army has acted quickly and arrested the soldiers, the paper noted that the subsequent investigation has raised accusations about whether the military ignored warnings that the out- of- control soldiers were committing atrocities.Military officials worry the hearings will draw further attention to the case, with photos and other evidence prompting anger among the Afghan civilians whose support is critical in the fight against the Taliban, The Post said. The unit was renamed the 2nd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, when it returned from Afghanistan in July, the paper noted. The father of one soldier said he repeatedly tried to alert the army after his son told him about the first killing, only to be rebuffed, The Post said.
Marco Verratti believes Paris Saint-Germain’s squad is benefitting from Thomas Tuchel’s direct approach to man management, something that was missing under previous boss Unai Emery.PSG won Ligue 1 once and both the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue twice during Emery’s two-season stay at Parc des Princes. However, Emery failed to land the club’s ultimate goal of the Champions League and during his time at the club there were suggestions of squad disharmony, while he is reported to have squabbled with big-name stars such as Neymar and Julian Draxler. Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! Former Borussia Dortmund coach Tuchel was appointed to replace Emery and PSG’s only competitive defeat since he took over was the 3-2 Champions League reverse away at Liverpool.Speaking to Le Parisien, Verratti said: “The coach is very close to the players. What we like, the whole team and me, is that he’s very direct.”He really tells you things. Sometimes they are not pretty, but he tells you. He is a good person and helps you to follow him, to give 100 per cent for him.”We know that he works a lot and that he wants the best for us. To achieve great goals, you all have to walk in the same direction. And, this year, we have a good understanding with the coach and the staff.”Asked if the difference between Tuchel and Emery was down to how they each interact with players, Verratti replied: “I think so, yes. “All coaches have a different way of going to the players, to make them understand things. Sometimes with Emery it was a little complicated.”We see that he [Tuchel] is happy in training. We train with a smile but we are always serious. Work hard but with a smile, this is the best method.”Coming to training with a straight face, it does not work. We found the smile we had lost.”Verratti concedes Tuchel can lose his temper if needs be, but he has no qualms with him doing so.”Yes, of course [he can get angry],” he said. “He says things directly. We like that.”When he has to congratulate the team, he does it. When there are things that do not work [he lets you know that], too.”Sometimes he does it in front of everyone, because some situations involve a player but must be understood by the whole team. Sometimes he talks to us individually.”We have a lot of exchanges. For the moment, it’s a really big surprise for everyone on this level, because we needed a coach like that.”
